Sol Canyon Art by Monica Burkett
_____
Monica is a photographer and mixed media artist based in Fort Worth, TX. After graduating with her BFA in photography from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2011, she found her love of imperfect film exposures accurately captured her whimsical and romantic relationship with the natural world. Adding in her own perspectives via threading, her work reverberates the sacred energies found within these moments whether it be walking through a Texas wildflower field in late May, a sunrise over Yosemite valley, red hot afternoons in the slot canyons of Moab, August days on Zuma beach, sunset surrounded by desert flora in the Chisos mountains or a morning on the snow-capped tundra of the Rockies. Her work explores the seen and unseen magic of the places we go to experience solitude, spirituality, a sense of self and awe.
The intentionality of film, the softness of fiber and the slowness of stitching all serve as quiet acts of devotion, allowing for meditative reflection and connection to something bigger. These textile photographic prints invite viewers to examine their own relationship to Mother Earth and her inhabitants, realizing the deep gift of coexisting with places that make us feel small in the best of ways. It’s a call to keep admiring and protecting sacred habitats and ecosystems that we and countless other living things need to survive existentially.
